DIET OF FINCHES.
All of the finches discussed in these pages are quite easy to feed as they all eat seed.
the favorite type of seed varies somewhat with the species of the bird, but all should be offered a variety.
Most important of the seeds to the majority of finches are millets. As an example, the diet of the waxbill consists of 80% small millet, and 10% canary seed.
The small grassfinches show nearly the same preference, but the larger birds such as SHAFT-TAILS, consume a slightly larger percentage of larger white millet and canary seed. The MANNIKINS also show a greater desire for the white millet, although like the others, they consume more of the yellow millet than any other seeds.
ALWAYS GIVE YOUR BIRDS GRIT AS ALL SEED-EATERS NEED GRIT TO HELP GRIND THEIR FOOD,AND CALCIUM TO BUILD UP BONES AND PRODUCE EGGSHELLS. MINERALISED GRIT AND SMALL PEICES OF CUTTLEFISH THAT HAS BEEN BAKED FOR 20 MINUTES, OR BAKED EGG SHELLS,WILL PROVIDE THESE REQUIREMENTS. AND I ADD CALCIVET MIX 10 TO 20 MLS OF CALCIVET TO 2 PINTS OF DRINKING WATER.ONCE OR TWICE A WEEK TO NON- BREEDING BIRDS OR FIVE TIMES A WEEK TO BREEDERS.OR IT CAN BE ADDED TO THE SOFTFOOD.
