BREEDING THE GOULDIAN FINCH.

I breed my gouldians in a cage size 18 by 15 by 15 inches and place the hen in first ( for a day). You can tell when a hen is in breeding condition: the beak goes dull black in colour. The nest box is also fixed outside of the cage, with soft hay and coconut fibre is used for nesting material. The next day i place the cock bird in the cage and if the birds are fit and compatible the cock will then display by bobbing up and down, wiping his beak on the perch and shaking his head. The hen will stand close to the cock and waggle her tail. Mating normally takes place in the nest box. the eggs should follow in 15- 18 days but then i usually let the hen lay her clutch of 4-6 eggs and take the first round away to foster under bengalese.I feed the bengalese e.m.p soft food twice a day. I close ring all young birds as i am a AFS member, moulting takes about 5-6 months.
